Work commences in May 2003 on the installation of a new turnout to Gort, Ennis and Limerick at Athenry.

The refusal of Iarnrod Eireann to provide a similar connection to Tuam means the Athenry-Tuam -Claremorris railway is effectively closed.

All railways in Ireland will be treated for weedgrowth in 2003 except the Athenry - Claremorris railway.

 

Claremorris - Athenry Railway

The reason for cutting the Claremorris- Athenry Railway North of Athenry and the failure of Iarnrod Eireann to include the Section in the Annual Weedspray programme has yet to be fully explained. Note here just north of Athenry the track is laid on concrete sleepers.
