Kenny says Western Rail Corridor essential for Western Development

Press Release - 1st February 2005

The Fine Gael leader Mr. Enda Kenny has said that the re-opening of the Western Rail Corridor is essential for the future economic and social development of the whole west and mid-west region. Speaking after meeting a delegation from the West on Track Community campaign on Saturday, Mr. Kenny said that the re-opening of the railway remained an integral part of Fine Gael's strategy for the future development of the West and pledged his party's full support for the re-opening of the entire rail corridor as one regional development project.

A spokesman for West on Track welcomed the remarks by Mr. Kenny and noted that he had spoken in similar terms to 700 people at the CFI dinner in Galway on the previous night.

Meanwhile in Limerick the Minister for Defence, Mr. Willie O'Dea met a West on Track delegation from Clare and Limerick and pledged his full support to any positive recommendations coming before the Government arising from the report of the Expert Working Group in March. Mr. Seán Keehan, spokesman for West on Track in Clare, said they had found the Minister to be completely up to date on developments and fully briefed on the proposed re-opening of the entire WRC.
