Sinn Féin welcomes
West of Ireland railway campaign

11 June 2003

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Transport Seán Crowe has welcomed the setting up of the West-On-Track campaign to be officially launched in Athenry this evening. The campaign is a non-partisan coming together of local people and communities in the towns, villages and cities of the West of Ireland aimed at re-opening the Western Rail Corridor, a passenger and freight railway line which runs from Sligo to Limerick.

The Dublin South-West TD said:

"This campaign was inevitable following publication of the Government's Strategic Rail Review, a plan that lacked vision, ambition and any coherent sense of the need to expand our rail networks across Ireland. There was little comfort in it for the people of the west and north-west of Ireland."

"The West of Ireland needs to be rejuvenated and Sinn Féin supports this campaign to ensure a more balanced form of national development by re-opening the Western Rail Corridor."
