30,000 sign West on Track Petition

27th June 2003

PRESS RELEASE - West=On=Track Community Campaign

West on Track has revealed that more than 30,000 people have signed the petition for the re-opening of the Western Rail Corridor since it was launched just under three weeks ago. A spokesman for West on Track, said that the organisers had been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of support for the campaign to date, and were confident of reaching their target of 100,000 signatures much sooner than expected.

"We are delighted at the enthusiasm being shown by ordinary people for this campaign," said the spokesman. "It is a clear indication that people in the west are no longer going to sit by and wait for things to happen. Instead they are prepared to go out and make it happen themselves."

And he pointed to the fact that West on Track has already had to reprint all of its campaign material as an indication of the gathering momentum for this community campaign.

"People can further express their support by sending one of the campaign postcards to the minister. These are available in shops and businesses across the west. In addition we ask everyone to e-mail the minister from our website www.westontrack.com by simply typing in their name in the box provided," he added.

Meanwhile Galway County Council unanimously passed a motion of support for the West on Track campaign at its meeting on Monday night. Similar motions are expected to come before Mayo and Sligo County Councils in July.
