West on Track Supports Call for Crusheen Halt

Press Release - 12th November 2006

The West on Track Community Campaign has strongly endorsed the proposal by Minister of State Tony Killeen TD that a halt be provided at the rapidly growing town of Crusheen as part of the development of Phase One of the Western Rail Corridor from Ennis to Athenry.

Supporting the Minister's suggestion, a spokesman for West on Track said that the provision of a halt at Crusheen would be a key element in maximising the usership of the soon to be re-opened railway.

"Local West on Track representative, Mr. Seán Keehan, has been championing this proposal now for over two years and we are pleased that Iarnród Éireann also appear to be taking a positive view of the idea," he stated.

"Given the recent opinion poll findings in Galway which showed large potential passenger numbers for the route it is increasingly clear that all the elements of the Western Rail Corridor will be strongly supported by the travelling public. This call by the Crusheen community, supported by Minister Killeen, further reflects the clear passenger demand across the entire western region and indeed should further encourage the Government to proceed consecutively with the last part of Phase 1, the section from Athenry to Claremorris," he added.
