EU Commitment to Funding for Co-Modality Rail Projects

Press Release 9th October 2007

FG MEP Jim Higgins has welcomed the news that the EU is to offer financial assistance for rail projects that would link airports in the EU by rail. The Commitment is contained in the Jensen report to be voted through the Parliament on Thursday.

Speaking from Brussels Mr Higgins said "The Commitment given by the EU to fund these projects under the European Regional Development Fund could have a significant impact on the Airports in the West of Ireland and the passengers that use them."

"The possibility of rail funding to link airports to the rail network may also open up the possibility to ensure that funding is made available to other sections of the line and improve the western rail corridor and widen the scope of the line"

Mr Higgins committed to following up with the European Commission in relation to funding for the rail projects in the West of Ireland.

Jim Higgins MEP is a Member of the European Parliament´s Transport and Tourism Committee
