National Award for West on Track

Press Release from the West=on=Track Community Campaign

Two of the founders of the West on Track campaign have won a prestigious An Taisce Environmental Award 2002-3 in the category "Best transportation initiative" for their community campaign aimed at re-opening the Western Rail Corridor.

Fr. Mícheál MacGréil and Colman Ó Raghallaigh will be presented with the award at a ceremony in Tailor's Hall Dublin, this evening (Thursday). The citation reads: "For the community-based campaign in the villages, towns and cities of the West of Ireland to re-open the western rail corridor, a passenger and freight railway line from Sligo to Limerick".

This is the first year of the Awards which are sponsored by the telecommunications group, O2.

A spokesman for West on Track said that the Award was a welcome recognition by An Taisce, a prestigious national body, of the need for balanced infra-structural development in Ireland, and congratulated all those who have been taking part in the campaign since last May for their dedication and support.
