Re-opening of Western Rail Corridor Investigated

Irish Independent - Friday 7th May 2004

By Treacy Hogan

THE Government yesterday appointed an expert working group to find out if it is feasible to re-open a western rail corridor linking Sligo, Galway, Limerick and Cork.

The group will be chaired by Pat McCann, chief executive of Jurys Doyle Hotel Group. Transport Minister Seamus Brennan said yesterday the rail corridor had the potential to play a vital strategic role in the eventual rebalancing of the west coast with the east coast as part of the implementation of the National Spatial Strategy.

"The Strategic Rail Review did not include the corridor in its recommended investment strategy but I declined to accept that finding as final," said Mr Brennan.

He said the working group was charged with examining the proposal from a range of aspects.
